چکیده

W e address the problem of estimating the structure and motion of a smooth curved object from its silhouettes observed over time by a trinocular imagery. W e first construct a model for the local structure along the silhouette for each frame in the temporal sequence. The local models are then integrated into a global surface description by estimating the motion between successive frames. The algorithm tracks certain surface and image features (parabolic points and silhouette inflections, frontier points) which are w e d to bootstrap the motion estimation process. The whole silhouette is then used to refine the initial motion estimate. W e have implemented the proposed approach and report preliminary results.

Structure and Motion from Silhouettes

Silhouettes (or outlines) are often a dominant image feature, and can be extracted relatively easily and reliably. They provide rich information about both the shape and motion of an object, and are indeed the only information available in the case of smooth textureless surfaces. Nonetheless, due to the viewpoint dependence of silhouettes, they do not readily provide point correspondences, and ...

Reconstruction of Outdoor Sculptures from Silhouettes under Approximate Circular Motion of an Uncalibrated Hand-Held Camera

This paper presents a novel technique for reconstructing an outdoor sculpture from an uncalibrated image sequence acquired around it using a hand-held camera. The technique introduced here uses only the silhouettes of the sculpture for both motion estimation and model reconstruction, and no corner detection nor matching is necessary. This is very important as most sculptures are composed of smo...

3D Articulated Models and Multi-View Tracking with Silhouettes

We propose a method to estimate the motion of a person filmed by two or more fixed cameras. The novelty of our technique is its ability to cope with fast movements, selfocclusions and noisy images. Our algorithms are based on the latest works on calibration and image segmentation developed in our lab. We compare the projections of a 3D model of a person on the images to the detected silhouettes...

Combining Stereo and Visual Hull for On-line Reconstruction of Dynamic Scenes

In this paper, we present a novel system which combines depth from stereo and visual hull reconstruction for acquiring dynamic real-world scenes at interactive rates. First, we use the silhouettes from multiple views to construct a polyhedral visual hull as an initial estimation of the object in the scene. The visual hull is used to limit the disparity range during stereo estimation. The use of...

Backpack: Detection of People Carrying Objects using Silhouettes

We described a video-rate surveillance algorithm to detect and track people from a stationary camera, and to determine if they are carrying objects or moving unencumbered. The contribution of the paper is the shape analysis algorithm that both determines if a person is carrying an object and segments the object from the person so that it can be tracked, e.g., during an exchange of objects betwe...
